Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters
- Only trick-or-treat at homes that have a porch light on.
- If you buy a costume, look for one made of flame-retardant material.
- Wear clothing with reflective markings or tape for greater visibility and/or carry a flashlight.
- Stay in a group on the sidewalk, walk slowly and communicate where you are going.
- Never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat.
- Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations.
- Don’t assume the right of way. Motorist may have trouble seeing.
- Motorists go very slowly through the neighborhood and watch out for trick-ortreaters.
- Although tampering is rare, tell children to bring the candy home to be inspected before consuming anything.
- Make sure your yard is clear anything that could pose a tripping hazard.
- If you do use candles, place the pumpkin well away from where the trick-or treater will be walking or standing.
- Healthy food alternatives for trick-or-treaters include crackers and cheese or peanut butter, real fruit rolls, mini boxes of raisins, or nonfood treats like pencils, erasers or stickers.
- Turn off your porch light and blow out any outside candles when you’ve run out of candy.
