Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

  1. Only trick-or-treat at homes that have a porch light on.
  2. If you buy a costume, look for one made of flame-retardant material.
  3. Wear clothing with reflective markings or tape for greater visibility and/or carry a flashlight.
  4. Stay in a group on the sidewalk, walk slowly and communicate where you are going.
  5. Never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat.
  6. Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations.
  7. Don’t assume the right of way. Motorist may have trouble seeing.
  8. Motorists go very slowly through the neighborhood and watch out for trick-ortreaters.
  9. Although tampering is rare, tell children to bring the candy home to be inspected before consuming anything.
  10. Make sure your yard is clear anything that could pose a tripping hazard.
  11. If you do use candles, place the pumpkin well away from where the trick-or treater will be walking or standing.
  12. Healthy food alternatives for trick-or-treaters include crackers and cheese or peanut butter, real fruit rolls, mini boxes of raisins, or nonfood treats like pencils, erasers or stickers.
  13. Turn off your porch light and blow out any outside candles when you’ve run out of candy.
